Out of this study, it was determined that existing and emerging approaches could not operate economically at a small, distributed scale. Technologies evaluated included biochemical conversion, gasification, plasma, traditional Fischer-Tropsch, ethanol production, and many others.
A new approach was conceived to enable distributed waste to fuels production – SynTerra Energy’s Syntrex™ platform. Following six years of development the Syntrex™ platform is ready for widespread commercial deployment.

SynTerra’s technologies are protected by issued and pending patents, with others under development. The identification and protection of Intellectual Property (IP) associated with our technologies is rigorous and we benefit from world class patent attorneys and IP consultants. We have adopted a robust approach to IP protection, including infringement protection in key markets.
Syntrex™ integrates two disruptive innovations: Solids Steam Reforming Process (SSRP) and One-Step Hydrocarbon Production (OSHP). These two breakthrough innovations (and the engineering know-how to integrate them effectively into one platform) are central to SynTerra’s superior economics since they eliminate many of the costly purification, cleaning, upgrading and refining steps required by other conversion processes.
First, our “Solids Stream Reforming Process” uses heat, pressure, and steam (in the absence of air or oxygen) to efficiently convert almost any organic waste resource into high-quality syngas that contains primarily hydrogen (H2) and carbon monoxide (CO). This is not traditional gasification.
Syngas is produced with less than 1,000-10,000 times the contaminant levels that are typically generated from competing systems, which reduces both plant capital and operating costs.
Our “Solids Steam Reforming” directly produces the proper H2 to CO ratio of 2 to 1, a ratio that is essential for the efficient production of fuels and chemicals and the gas doesn’t contain diluents such as nitrogen and deleterious catalyst oxidants.
Next, using our “One Step Hydrocarbon Production” and our proprietary catalysts, H2 and CO is directly converted into either quality drop-in diesel fuel, fuel performance additives, or high value chemicals. Products can be changed based on the catalyst used.
The SynTerra technical team used lessons from its work in the polymer industry in the development of the Syntrex™ designer catalysts, enabling the specific tailoring of a hydrocarbon mixture directly from syngas.
Syntrex™ does not need many of the expensive processes, such as product refining and upgrading, which are required by its competitors using traditional Fischer-Tropsch approaches.
